TRIP REPORTS:

The club would like to extend a thank you to the Q..... clean-up crew! Jeff and Wendy Kirsh get an extra thank you for volunteering for the ominous task of dead animal removal!! Ron Peterson, Donna Bender, John Augustine and Dan & Diane Turcovsky lent their talents to making our q..... beautiful for the Treasure Dive. Thank you to everyone!

Joe Gordon reported on our annual Treasure Dive. “It was a dark and stormy night…” Friday night, a brave few thwarted the storm to put up the tent to shelter us all from the elements. Saturday, a few members participated in a kayak party on the river. Sunday marked the Treasure Dive. Kudos goes out to our weight placers this year, as Joe reported the weights were very hard to find on the south end, and came back empty handed. (Rest assured that he was awarded a prize) A complete list of the treasures is included.

Joe also reported on his trip to Yellow Creek. He retrieved the buoy markers for the swimming area, which were broken. Joe also got to practice compass runs as the visibility was approximately 3’. Joe did do some sight seeing in the lake, but eventually called the dive for safety reasons, he did recall that it was very nice to be able to get the chance to turn bolts under water!

Bert reported on the trip to 1,000 Islands. They left on a Friday. Saturday they dove Kings Horn and Keystorm, with approximately 40-50’ visibility with water temps about 70. Sunday they did a drift dive. The boats they were on were nice and roomy, and had short runs to the sights. The Captains were very nice and accommodating.

Ron Peterson reported on his trip to Indian River Inlet. He dove the wreck of the Northern Pacific in 135’ of water. The wreck was a passenger liner that was used to carry troops.

Ron also reported on a trip to Lock Haven in the Susquehanna River. His maximum depth was 13’, and it was a very clear dive. He reported that it was excellent for training. He then went to Dutch Springs and had more great diving there.

We had three people volunteer to audit our books before the next meeting, Barb Wyland, Lance Marks, and Greg Lilly will be auditing our books 1 hour before next months meeting.

The club would like to extend our gratitude to our past President Brad McVicker and acting President Joe Gordon. Thank you guys for all your hard work and dedication!

During this meeting we were fortunate to be able to hear about to events that have happened that we, as divers, can learn from.

Guest speaker, Bill Kimmick, shared the experience he had on his very last dive when he got the bends. He said he was doing a 200’ dive on trimix. He did his first safety stop at 130’, which he wasn’t required to do but always felt safer making an extra stop. He did his next safety stop at 60’ where he experienced an equipment failure; the result was a free ascent to the surface in about 45 seconds. He signaled for help and was immediately put on oxygen, took aspirin and began drinking water. At this point he felt no symptoms. Then Next morning he had pain in his arm and immediately called DAN who immediately arranged for a chamber. Bill said that he didn’t get bent badly and attributes that to doing deep stops and drinking plenty of water before he did any deep diving. He recommended to everyone, that although it might not be necessary, when you do a deep dive do a safety stop ½ of the way to the top, along with the recommended stop. The doctors said the extra stop and the fluids was probably what saved him. He also strongly recommends DAN insurance as they covered 100% of the costs.

Jim Smith also shared a story about a dive he was on in Moorehead. The divers were briefed of a strong current and advised to stay on the line. One of the divers decided that he go off the line and ended up getting carried away by the current. The Coast Guard was called to help search and eventually a fishing boat found him 3.54 miles away from where her went in the water. The lesson learned here, the dive master and captain know what they’re talking about, do what they tell you, they are only concerned about your safety.

Thank you to both of you for sharing these stories!
